Going to School to Become a Medical Assistant
A medical assistant is someone who works with other professionals in the medical field to ensure the patient’s needs are met. An assistant may be in charge of helping organize equipment needed for procedures or any number of professional duties that ensure the health care facility that they work in is well organized and running smoothly.
What do Medical Assistants Do?
Medical assistants work in several different areas, but do not typically work as part of the clinical, or treatment, staff. Instead, these professionals work to take information as needed from patients, file information for insurance, educate patients on medications, and help other medical staff with preparing patients for treatment. A licenses physician needs to be present any time that an assistant performs a medical procedure, aside from taking vital sign and other minor duties.
Most medical assistants can also perform some tests as directed by the physician, such as drawing blood for medical testing. Training and state laws play a big part in the types of duties that medical assistants can perform. As with many types of health care jobs, assistants are in high demand. Graduates can often find an internship as an assistant within a very short time of obtaining their degree. A certification isn’t necessary to work in this field, but it will give you an advantage when you are trying to get hired.
Getting Your Degree
Your education and training is the most important thing to consider when becoming a medical assistant. You can often take additional courses during the course of your education to perform medical procedures that you may not otherwise be able to complete. A diversified education that includes practical training to entry into the medical field can allow you to earn more and complete more duties than a straightforward degree as a medical assistant.
Clinical training that is included in the program will typically include some limited pharmaceutical training as well as classes in bookkeeping and accounting. If you are the type of person who becomes bored doing the same thing day after day, then this career path is perfect for you. You will perform a wide range of duties and will get to meet new people on a daily basis. Your training can be completed in just two years, but you do need to pass your certification and take continuing education classes to maintain your certification.
